Finally, A Cucumber

But we had to grow it in a cage

For years I’ve tried to grow cukes, squash, and beans in our large garden, but the tasty starts and young fruits were immediately consumed by hungry critters. Flowers too!

Now it’s smiling me nibbling a fully grown fruit, in this case an Early Fortune Cucumber, “perfect for slicing or pickling.” Or just eating out of hand.

This year we expanded the driveway garden, loaded it up with fresh dead wood and compost, and caged the whole endeavor with trellises I can lift out individually.

Now there are multiple cukes on the way, plus summer and winter squash and beans. Have the critters been defeated? Please let’s not tempt fate.
